Forgings are used where High Strength material component is required such as Generator Shafts. These forged materials when manufactured are subjected to Heat and Compression to attain the required Strength and Shape. this manufacturing process may induce some defects into these forged materials, most commonly volumetric defects such as Porosity & Inclusion.

Presence of these defects may affect the reliability and endurance of the part. Such defects can always be identified by Ultrasonic Equipment with Distance Gain Size (DGS) Scanning facility. These defects, at Subsurface or deep core of the material, can be located and sized by this technique.

Some volumetric defects may require Advanced PAUT scanning technique where as sub surface defects can be located by conventional methods.
